Qatar Withdraws from Hosting FIVB Event
Qatar has withdrawn from hosting the 2009 FIVB world men’s club volleyball championship Nov. 1-9, resulting in the cancellation of the event for this year.
Qatar Volleyball Association technical director Hussein Imam Ali told the Gulf Times that the Middle Eastern country has abandoned its rights to host the event due to the effects of the global economic downturn.
“We conveyed to [the FIVB] the difficulties in raising funds to meet the budget for the event, due to the current global financial turbulence,” Ali said.
“We also made clear that the income that we would be generating from selling FIVB television and marketing rights for the event was much lower than the cost of production and hence the request for cancellation.”
The withdrawal of Qatar is a setback for the FIVB in its attempts to revive the event, which was discontinued in 2002 due to organizational and financial difficulties.
However, the federation will proceed with plans to accept bids for the 2010 tournament at the end of the year.
