(ATR) The 5th Annual Asian Beach Games (ABG5) provides a level playing field for all NOCs unlike other Games, according to OCA Athletes’ Committee memberTayyab Ikram.

At the Rio Olympic Games 100 NOCs left the country without a single medal whereas during ABG5, 33 of the 45 NOCs competing have been awarded medals with at least 22 of them winning one gold so far.

Ikram expressed how the OCA’s mission to keep "Athletes First" was the biggest difference between the Olympics and the Asian Beach Games and bridged the gap between stronger NOCs and developing countries providing all athletes with convenient accommodations and sociable settings.

"The ABG does not need an Athletes’ Village, as the athletes and officials are accommodated in beach-front hotels nearest their competition venue. This creates a very social and friendly environment, especially as the athletes can walk to their competition venues.

"This is one of the strongest elements of "Athletes First" because they have very good conditions, not only to participate but also to perform to the best of their ability. That is the beauty of the Asian Beach Games."

The OCA Athletes Committee also believes ABG5fully emulates the ideals of the Olympic Agenda 2020 set by IOC President Thomas Bach.

"The Olympic Council of Asia will continue to put "Athletes First" and provide them with opportunities to experience Olympism and promote the Olympic values and spirit throughout the continent," Tayyab adds.

Host country Vietnam is currently leading the medal table with 88 medals total, 31 being gold. Thailand which hosted the 2014 Beach Games is following close behind with 66 medals. China is third with 37 medals total and 10 gold.

The games will conclude with the closing ceremony on Oct. 3.
