New Record Broadcast Figures as Dubai Sevens produces Crunch Quarter finals

A record number of international broadcasters aired action from a single round of the HSBC Sevens World Series as England, Fiji, South Africa and Wales all enjoyed fine starts to Round 2, the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens.

Defending champions England defeated France in the final match of day one to finish unbeaten and top their pool, while Fiji outgunned Samoa, Wales overcame Australia and South Africa produced a stunning performance to defeat HSBC Sevens World Series champions New Zealand.

More record Broadcast figures for Sevens

The IRB has announced figures showing that the Dubai event has smashed the record for the number of live hours broadcast from a single round of the Series.

The Dubai round of the 2011/12 Series will accumulate 222 hours of live television, up from 182 hours in 2010. The figure surpasses the previous best, 191 hours of live broadcast from the Hong Kong Sevens 2011. In all, 22 broadcasters are showing live pictures from Dubai, up from 14 last year, which has also increased the number of countries receiving live pictures, from 90 to 120.

New era for Women's Sevens

The first ever IRB-sanctioned Women’s Sevens event also kicked off today, the IRB Women’s Sevens Challenge Cup.

Contested in Dubai alongside the men's competition in a tough, eight-team format across two pools of four, England and Canada went unbeaten to top their respective groups. England accounted for China, South Africa and USA, while the Canadians beat Brazil and Spain before a battling win against Rugby World Cup Sevens champions Australia.
