Madrid 2020 supported by 40 sponsors

Madrid, 10 May 13

Speaking on behalf of the Madrid 2020 team and the people of Madrid, the Mayor of Madrid, Ana Botella, and the Madrid 2020 Bid President, Alejandro Blanco, expressed their gratitude to the corporate sponsors of the city’s Olympic bid.

"In these difficult times your contribution is an act of courage," said Botella at the event in which the sponsors were officially presented. "More than anything your contribution to Madrid 2020 is a proof of confidence in our country and in our ability to undertake any kind of project successfully."

The mayor underlined the power of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to transform the cities that host them by boosting the economy, revitalising industry and reinforcing the global image of the city and the country as a whole.

She added that the Games represented a great opportunity to improve the quality of life of citizens: "The boost provided by the Olympics lasts over time and is felt by the whole country."

Madrid 2020 has the support of Spain’s biggest companies, who as Botella pointed out, create both jobs and wealth.

"We can work with you in developing the so-called intangible legacy," she said, in reference to the advent of new management models, new concepts of urban mobility, more and better technologies, responsible and intelligent investment and cost control. She added that the Games represented the best possible opportunity for thousands of youngsters to break into the labour market.

Blanco, who is also the President of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), echoed those views, stating that some 40 companies have come together to support the dreams of millions of people, forming in the process one of the bid’s most solid bases.

Enthusiastically endorsing Madrid 2020’s chances of success, Mayor Botella sounded an optimistic note as the event came to a close: "Spain is capable of taking on any type of challenge and reaching the highest professional standards in achieving goals relating to construction, organisation or management. The time has now come for the whole world to see that."
