Leakage of personal data from Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China official website

The Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (Federation) has just been informed by the Hong Kong Police Force on 20 May 2013 that the personal data of the event organized by the Federation were illegally uploaded onto the internet. The Federation would take this opportunity to express its apology to all affected parties in this incident.

According to the readily in-hand information, some 2,800 personal data including names, dates of birth, telephone numbers, addresses and/or ID card numbers of the nominees of the Bank of China Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards 2011, public voters who participated in the Online Public Voting in the above event from 7 January 2012 to 31 January 2012 and the participants of the "Samsung Guess the Winners Contest" during the period from 1 February 2012 to 7 February 2012 were leaked out.

The Federation would inform soonest possible those possibly affected in order to alert them of this incident. The Federation in collaboration with the Police is now investigating the means of this leakage and the motive of illegally uploading those data onto the internet. We will report this incident soonest possible to the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data. To prevent the same incident from happening again, the Federation has requested all contractors of the Federation events’ websites to inspect the security system immediately. In the meantime, the Federation will evaluate the current security management of all personal data on our websites to ensure a proper handling and protection of such data.

If any of the affected persons suspect that their personal data are used illegally due to this incident, they should seek the assistance direct from the Police.
