The International Masters Games Association has declared the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games the best ever.
“The Sydney 2009 World Masters Games were the best Games ever, setting a new standard and raising the event to an international level where we haven’t been before,” said Kai Holm, President of the IMGA, after the nine-day sport festival.
Shane O’Leary, Chief Executive Officer of the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games Organising Committee, said that he and his team had delivered on the promises made to the IMGA when Sydney secured the right to host the seventh Games.
“Sydney has put its unique stamp on the World Masters Games and taken another major multi-sport event to new heights,” Mr O’Leary said.
“Sydney’s staging of the World Masters Games has seen the participation base rise to 28,292 people from 95 countries, a 30% increase on the numbers in Edmonton four years ago and 13% higher than the old record set by the 2002 Games in Melbourne.
“Sydney achieved what it set out to do – deliver another international sports event acclaimed as the best ever and leave a legacy for the World Masters Games.
“I would like to thank the IMGA for entrusting the World Masters Games to Sydney and for the outstanding support of it and the international sport federations before, during and after an event that will live long in the memory of many, many people.”
The Sydney 2009 World Masters Games were an economic success as well as a sporting one, with projections indicating that the event, which attracted more than 8,000 international competitors, will be worth $50 million to New South Wales.
Another recent Olympic city, Turin, will stage the 2013 World Masters Games.
