30 September 2009, Singapore – Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore’s Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, today unveiled the seven Culture and Education Programme (CEP) pictograms for the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games at Pulau Ubin, a venue for one of the CEP activities, the Island Adventure (Please see fact sheet). CEP is a key and unique feature of the Youth Olympic Games.
Adapted from the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games emblem and sport pictograms, the CEP pictograms depict the seven formats of activities that Singapore 2010 has to offer to young athletes taking part in the Games next year. The seven formats are Chat with Champions, Discovery Activity, World Culture Village, Arts and Culture, Community Project, Exploration Journey and Island Adventure. The CEP pictograms, together with the Singapore 2010 emblem and sport pictograms make up the Games’ visual identity.
“For the Youth Olympic Games, we have integrated the sport competition with the Culture and Education Programme. The CEP encourages greater learning, sharing and interaction among the athletes while inspiring them to embrace and live the
Olympic values. The CEP pictograms launched today will help athletes and coaches relate better to the range of CEP activities that they can look forward to during Games-time,” said Mr Goh Kee Nguan, Chief Executive Officer of the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee. “We are privileged to partner Outward Bound Singapore to develop the Island Adventure activity for the athletes. It is an important CEP activity that encourages team-building and friendships, and will give the athletes lasting and fond memories of their times in Singapore.”
"The Island Adventure at Outward Bound Singapore, Pulau Ubin will give athletes a chance to experience the outdoors and challenge them to work together in team and confidence-building scenarios, participate in water activities, and overcome physical challenges. For example, the raft-building activity highlights the importance of friendship and teamwork. Through the activity, it encourages respect for each others’ views as athletes discuss how to put together a floatable raft from simple
tools such as ropes and barrels," said Ms May Tan, Deputy General Manager (OB Youth), Outward Bound Singapore.
The Games-time CEP activities have been developed to inspire athletes to adopt and live by the Olympic values of excellence, Friendship and Respect. They are built around five themes:
• Olympism. This topic traces the origins, philosophy, structure and evolution of the modern Olympic Games to the present day.
• Skills Development. This topic considers various facets of a professional athlete’s career, including personal development and managing transitional phases in life.
• Well-Being and Healthy Lifestyle. This topic covers the promotion of a healthy lifestyle including healthy eating and stress management, besides dealing with the issue of doping in sport.
• Social Responsibility. The issues of environment, sustainable development and community relations in the context of being a responsible global citizen will be discussed.
• Expression. Activities under this theme include learning and interaction opportunities via the digital media and evening festivals at the Youth Olympic Village.
The Games-time CEP activities will be integrated with the sport competition schedule and athletes can choose to participate in these activities in their own free time. These activities will complement the on-going CEP activities in Singapore schools, such as the Olympic Education Programme and Friends@YOG, and CEP activities for the youth such as the Singapore 2010-CAN! festivals.
