During today’s ETTU Executive Board meeting in Ostrava, Czech Republic, the Danish City of Herning was appointed to host the 2012 European Table Tennis Championships.
The Danish Table Tennis Federation, The municipality of Herning and Sport Event Denmark presented an attractive bid with an exciting side events programme for the beautiful MCH Multiarena as well as throughout the whole city. The European Table Tennis Union, ETTU, praised the bid emphasising the professional Danish approach.
The mayor of Herning, Lars Krarup said: "To be awarded the championships reassures us that our strategy of attracting major international sports events now really is succeeding. We are proud to be awarded another big event and we look forward to hosting the European table tennis elite in 2012 in the brand new multiarena."
Chief executive of Sport Event Denmark, Lars Lundov said: "2012 Table Tennis European Championships are an important event and will be used as a build up for the world championships in Denmark some time in the future."
Chairman of the Danish Table Tennis Federation, Aksel Beckmann said: "We look forward once again to bringing table tennis to the highest level in Denmark. The 2012 European Table Tennis Championships will form the centre of a great festival where all can come and play table tennis in Herning in 2012."
The championships in 2012 will be staged only two months after the Olympic Games and will be the first major event after the Games in London. Participants from all European countries are expected to come. Ostrava hosts the 2010 European Table Tennis Championships this week where 45 countries will be represented.
Denmark already successfully hosted the European Championships in 2005, in Aarhus, winning the men’s team gold medal. It is now Herning’s turn.
