
Sportel takes place every October in Monaco.(ATR) Sports executives from across the industry gathered in Monaco Monday for what is expected to be the best-attended Sportel event in its 18-year history.
SportelMonaco, running from Oct.20 to 23, is organized under the patronage ofPrince Albert of Monaco and is the only international convention that brings together the movers and shakers from the world of sport and television.
Prince Albert is one of several IOC members making an appearance. He will visit the conference Tuesday; Switzerland's Denis Oswald, The Netherlands' Hein Verbruggen and Israel's Alex Gilady are also scheduled to attend.
LOCOG chair Sebastian Coe and Danny Jordaan, CEO of the 2010 FIFA World Cup organizing committee in South Africa, are key participants.
Representatives from the 2016 Olympics candidate cities will have a low-key presence; the leaders for Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo are preparing to make presentations to the Olympic Council of Asia General Assembly in Bali this week.
“We have seen notable change in the sports-right market as regards the rights of new technologies, changes which are accompanied by significant amounts of revenues. It is for this reason that SportelMonaco has increased the number of events on this topic this year,” said David Tomalis, CEO of Sportel. The crowd in the market.
The focus on new technologies embraces topics including digital terrestrial television, personal mobile television, 3G mobile telephone services and HDTV. One session Monday was titled: “The Digital Revolution: towards more sports rights segmentation and the proliferation of formats."
On Tuesday morning, there's a symposium called “Olympic Games and Television: from Beijing to London." A press conference on the 2009 Kaohsiung World Games takes place in the afternoon.
SportelMonaco stages its first workshop on Football & New Media on Wednesday. The one-day seminar will offer a hands-on approach on how to make the most of new technologies and new content to increase revenues and broaden the fan base. English football clubs Chelsea and Liverpool will present their new media strategies during the session.
Exhibitors include sports federations and associations along with companies providing sports programming and sports content across all distribution platforms.
