February 9, 2016, Seoul – The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) is moving forward with great enthusiasm with 2-years-to-go until the opening day of the next edition of the Olympic Winter Games.
POCOG closed the previous weekend on a high note with the successful hosting of the nation’s first downhill and super-G World Cup races, the first in a series of 28 test events. Athletes visiting the new Jeongseon Alpine Centre expressed satisfaction of the course and operations went on without major issues.
As February 9 falls in the middle of the lunar New Year holidays in Korea, no special event is being held to commemorate the milestone. But that does not mean that the Organizing Committee is just taking the day off. POCOG is busier than ever, wrapping up the Ski World Cup and putting on the final touches in preparations for the Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Cups to be held in the Bokwang Snow Park from February 18. Pre-homologation for the Alpensia Sliding Centre is also scheduled for early March.
In addition to the test events, the calendar for 2016 is full with plans for a productive and prosperous year leading up to the Games in 2018, including the unveiling of mascots, pictograms and official look of the Games, volunteer recruitment and the ticket sales launch to the general public.
POCOG President Yang-Ho CHO noted "It will be a very busy and challenging two years ahead. But just this past weekend, we showed the world that we can deliver, and deliver well on our promises to host the world’s best athletes in Korea."
"With the beginning of our test events, POCOG has moved into the operational phase of Games preparation. We are learning many lessons, and we were especially encouraged by the positive response from athletes this past weekend. During the remaining two years, operations will be improved through close cooperation with the IOC, IFs and various client groups to make sure everything is ready," he added.
