Debanhi Escobar: his father's heartbreaking cries for body found in motel cistern

Thirteen days after the disappearance of Debanhi Susana Escobar Bazaldúa in Nuevo León, state authorities confirmed the discovery of a body in a cistern that is part of the Nueva Motel Castilla, near the last place where the 18-year-old was seen alive and one of the first places where the search began.

As soon as this was known, Debanhi's father, Mario Escobar, was informed and moved to the premises to be close to the scene if it was confirmed that it was his little girl.

Desperation flooded him and from one moment to the next it exploded against the agents who were already on the premises. At a safe pace, while he was outside the motel restaurant, he approached the cops, opened his mouth as big as he could and expressed his anger.

At the news of the discovery, at least 200 people, including authorities, volunteers and relatives, arrived at the scene to help as much as possible and wait for news about the body inside the cistern, which, according to a statement from the State Prosecutor's Office, was abandoned.

“The Attorney General's Office of Nuevo León reports that in the surveys of land near the place of disappearance of citizen Debanhi Susana Escobar Bazaldúa, in Escobedo Nuevo León, the investigating agents assigned to the case have located a lifeless body in inside an abandoned water cistern,” he reported.

In the same way, the local authority announced that, due to the conditions in which the site of the discovery is located, “At this time it is not possible to establish general characteristics of the lifeless person, which will be informed at the conclusion of the work carried out by the criminalists assigned to the extraction”.

During an interview with Milenio, the Nuevo León prosecutor, Gustavo Adolfo Guerrero, did not confirm that it is Debanhi Escobar, so he explained that it will take one to three days to have an accurate answer due to scientific processes to analyze the identity of the body.

However, he said that before carrying out this process, the parents of the missing girl could observe the body and know whether it was their daughter or not, although he reiterated that such information, if it was released, would be unofficial, so he asked to remain calm on the details of the case.

On the way they noticed this body, Adolfo Guerrero reported that hotel employees reported a foul smell from coladeras. He went to the anti-kidnapping prosecutor, who assured him that there were some “things around” the motel.

He later declared that the place where the cistern is located is located inside the hotel, in a pool area that was abandoned some time ago. He also explained that the place did not have recording cameras, only for monitoring, so no records of the place were stored on the day of Debanhi Escobar's disappearance.

After several hours of work, specialists continue to work in the place that presents some difficulties, such as the depth (which is 4 meters) and the accumulation of water, characteristics that have made it difficult to extract from the body.

The prosecutor was questioned as to how the body was found in a place that had already been traced, so he did not rule out that it was placed after the first search carried out by the authorities.

Finally, he said that as soon as the body is removed, it will be transferred to the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) to carry out the autopsy of the law to determine its cause of death and to be certain, through analysis, whether it is the missing girl. In addition, he stressed that investigations will begin to delineate responsibilities until reaching a conclusion.
