Eddy Reynoso announced the brand new rival that Canelo Álvarez would look for if Golovkin can't win

The Mexican fighter would have agreed on the third fight against “GGG” in September, as long as the two can overcome their previous rivals

LAS VEGAS, NV - SEPTEMBER 12: Boxer Canelo Alvarez (C), his manager/trainer Jose "Chepo" Reynoso (L) and trainer Eddy Reynoso (R) pose after a news conference at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino on September 12, 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada. After a spectacular 2021 for Canelo Álvarez, the Mexican fighter will seek to maintain his spectacular state of form and provide more spectacle to his fans, which is why he will jump to 175 pounds for the second time to try to defeat one of the most powerful rivals of the light heavyweight, Dmitry Bivol.

The objective of this fight agreed with the promoter of Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Boxing, is a pact of two multi-million dollar fights, with the name of Gennady Golovkin set for the month of September. With these two fights he would try to shine before his fans; however, the event against the Kazakh depends on the results they obtain previously.

Just as Saul will face Bivol on May 7, Golovkin will jump into the ring this Saturday, April 9 to face Japanese Ryoto Murata, a commitment that different experts have called “dangerous” for GGG, so the veteran's victory could be at risk.

In the event that Gennady Golovkin cannot defeat the 36-year-old Japanese or even ends up injured from the fight, the Canelo Team would look for a new rival for the month of September, one just as ambitious to the challenge they had in 2021, when Saul Álvarez became the undisputed champion of 168 pounds.

The brand-new rival Eddy Reynoso and Canelo Alvarez would be the winner of the fight between Artur Beterbiev and Joe Smith Jr. , where the light heavyweight belts of the World Boxing Council (WBC), the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and the World Boxing Organization (WBO) will be contested.

For this reason and according to Eddy Reynoso, if the fight against Golovkin falls, Canelo could opt in September for a new undisputed championship in the 175 pounds, since he should have previously won the scepter by the World Boxing Association (WBA) to Dmitry Bivol.

“We have some clauses in case Saul doesn't go against Golovkin. There may be a cut, an injury, an accident, etc. So, if we win in May, we could have the doors open to make a fight against the winner of Beterbiev and Smith. We have a good relationship with Bob Arum (CEO of the Top Rank promoter), and it's a fight that I think will happen sooner or later,” said Canelo's coach for A Los Golpes.

Similarly, Reynoso explained the difficulties that the Mexican will have when jumping from super middleweight to light heavyweight, explaining that “whenever you gain weight it is a risk, because you are going to face fighters who are used to handling a certain amount of kilos at the time of the fight. It is a risk that Canelo takes against an undefeated fighter (Dmitry Bivol) with good victories, it is an important challenge for his career,” Eddy stated.

Finally, the leader of the Canelo Team explained that Golovkin's fight against Murata will be key for Saul, both due to a possible change of rival, and to know what the Mexican would face if the Kazakh prevail in Japan.

“As for Golovkin, we will see how he behaves against Murata. There are fighters who from one fight to another can become an old man and others who after 40 have made their best fights. Nowadays we don't know, we have to see what it looks like against Murata. That fight is going to be the guideline to see what Golovkin offers against Canelo.”

In this way, Saúl Álvarez's next rival will be determined if he wins against Bivol, because although the road is painted towards the third edition of Canelo vs GGG, everything could change this Saturday, April 9 in the Golovkin fight.
