Los Angeles, 23 Mar 25 years after the release of the film “Selena”, which recreates the beginnings and the brilliant rise in music of the queen of tex-mex, Selena Quintanilla, the film returns to US cinema screens from April 7. The film, which was released on March 21, 1997, returns to the cinemas as part of the tributes that the artist is receiving this year. The announcement was made through the official social media pages of the late star. The film was released two years after Selena was shot dead at the age of 23 by Yolanda Saldivar, who was president of the singer's fan club. Next week marks 27 years since Selena Quintanilla's death, but although almost three decades have passed since her murder, her popularity and legacy are alive like never before. Jennifer Lopez, who played Selena and catapulted her acting career with the appointment, celebrated the film's return to movie theaters. “This film means a lot to me. Selena and her family mean a lot to me and I was very lucky that they chose me to play it,” Lopez wrote. “I will never forget that time in my life and it is an honor as an artist to have been part of the magic that this film is,” he added. Last year, the film about Selena entered the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress of the United States, as being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” The film, which was largely shot in San Antonio, Texas, was directed by Gregory Nava. Veteran actor Edward James Olmos played Selena's father, Abel Quintanilla. The locations of the cinemas in which the film will be shown have not yet been announced. Also in April, a new album by Selena will be released, which will have 13 songs recorded by the artist before her death and with new arrangements by her brother A.B. Quintanilla. CHIEF amv/msc
