LVIV, Ukraine — Russian forces bomb and destroy a bridge in the fenced city of Chernigov, says the region's governor, Viacheslav Chaus.

The destroyed bridge was used to allow civilians to leave and humanitarian aid to arrive. It crossed the Desna River and connected the city with the country's capital, Kiev.

Chernigov authorities said Tuesday that the city had no water or electricity and called the situation a humanitarian disaster.

Explosions and bursts of gunfire shook Kiev on Wednesday morning, and intense artillery fire could be heard from the northwest, where Russian forces have tried to surround and take over the suburbs of the capital.
