Gibraltar retains a Russian tycoon's yacht

The yacht of Russian magnate Dimitri Pumpianski was held in the British enclave of Gibraltar after being denounced by a credit bank, authorities reported, who linked that action to British sanctions imposed by the Ukrainian war.

The ship, dubbed “Axiom” and flagged by Malta, was “the subject of a detention order by a large international bank at the Supreme Court of Gibraltar,” the government of this small British enclave located in the far south of Spain said on Monday.

Despite British sanctions against numerous Russian tycoons, Gibraltar authorized the ship's entry into port “in the interest of creditors with legitimate claims against the ship,” added the Gibraltar authorities, who did not elaborate on the case.

“The ship is now subject to detention by the Sheriff of the Admiralty,” who is in charge of maritime affairs, “until further notice,” the note added.

After a meeting with Gibraltar's head of government Fabian Picardo, the head of British diplomacy, Liz Truss, celebrated on Tuesday on Twitter the retention “by Gibraltar of Dimitri Pumpianski's superyacht following United Kingdom sanctions”.

Head of oil and gas pipeline giant TMK, Pumpianski is also one of the Russian oligarchs targeted by the European Union following the Russian invasion of Ukraine that began on February 24.

Several countries, such as Spain, Italy or France, have already held different yachts linked to Russian billionaire in accordance with the sanctions that provide for the freezing of all their assets in the European Union.
