A drug trafficker who has been demanding for extradition since 2014, identified as Tokiro Rodas Ramírez, was captured this Friday in Choluteca, southern Honduras, local media reported.
Rodas Ramirez, who is apparently of Salvadoran origin, is a member of the MS-13 gang, according to a November 2011 version of the U.S. Department of Justice.
The drug trafficker, alias “El Perverso”, was requested by the United States in 2014, Honduran Minister of Security Ramón Sabillón said briefly, according to the versions that have transcended in Tegucigalpa.
Rodas Ramírez was transferred to Tegucigalpa, where this Saturday the extradition process will begin and he will be appearing before the judiciary, said the Supreme Court of Justice on the social network Twitter.
“First hearing in the #Extradición process for Tokiro Rodas Ramírez, captured in the last hours and requested by #USA since 2014, will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 2:00pm in the Hearing Hall of the Supreme Court of Justice,” the message underlines.
The Honduran Foreign Ministry reported on the 3rd that the United States requested the provisional arrest for the purpose of extradition of four Hondurans, whose names were not released, “for security reasons.”
In addition, on February 14, the United States also requested the provisional arrest for the purpose of extradition of former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who was captured a day later at his residence in Tegucigalpa.
The extradition was approved by a natural judge from Tegucigalpa last Wednesday and the defense of the former ruler is expected to file an appeal to the plenary session of the Supreme Court on Saturday.
On the 9th, the former chief of the National Police Juan Carlos Bonilla was captured, who is also being asked by the United States in extradition.
Bonilla was indicted in April 2020 and requested by the US in May 2021.
Since 2014, the Central American nation has extradited about thirty Hondurans accused of drug trafficking to the United States, while others preferred to surrender to that country's authorities, including Juan Antonio “Tony” Hernández, brother of former President Juan Orlando Hernández.
“Tony” Hernandez was sentenced in the United States to life imprisonment plus 30 years in prison for drug trafficking, on March 31, 2021.
