BEIJING (AP) — Health authorities in China reported on Saturday two deaths from COVID-19, the first deaths recorded by the Asian nation since January 2021, at a time when the country is fighting a wave of omicron.
The deaths, both in the northeastern province of Jilin, bring the number of deaths from coronavirus in the country to 4,638.
China reported 2,157 new cases of COVID-19 due to community transmission on Saturday, most of them in Jilin. The province has instituted travel restrictions, and people need permission from the police to cross borders.
China had recorded 4,636 deaths since the pandemic began in the central city of Wuhan in late 2019. In April 2020, it revised its death toll once, adding new deaths that were not initially counted, as the pandemic overwhelmed hospitals and other city systems.
