The 2022 Formula 1 season has officially kicked off with the launch of the Bahrain Grand Prix in its free practice stage. The first practices of the year have left some surprises such as the absence of Lewis Hamilton from the top ten in FP2 or the presence of Haas pilots within them. Sergio Pérez maintained a low-key performance by taking the tenth and seventh positions.

On board Red Bull Racing's RB18, the Mexican did not show any better performance during the free sessions, either in the morning or at night. However, it is common for teams, as well as riders to be saved for FP3, which are the last training sessions before qualifying. His teammate Max Verstappen also did not make an outstanding day, so everything goes to reaffirm that his performance was not proportional to the capacity of the car.

The first session of the day was marked by the dominance of the Frenchman Pierre Gasly with one of the two cars of the Alpha Tauri team. In around 22 laps on the track, the former Red Bull set the best time of the morning by registering 1:34 .193 on the stopwatch. He was followed by the two Ferrari drivers, Charles Leclerc in second place and Carlos Sainz in third. Both are less than half a second apart.

George Russell won the fourth best record in his first time as a fixed driver for Mercedes (in 2020 he drove a single-seater of the star team against Lewis Hamilton's loss from Covid-19 at the Bahrain GP). The quintet was completed with the presence of reigning world champion Max Verstappen.

The Mexican, the only Latin American on the grid of the top category of motorsport, completed 22 laps and his best timer was 1:35 .050, which earned him tenth place in the practice. The difference from first place was 0.857 seconds.

Already at night, the Bahrain desert witnessed the rise in performance of all runners. Especially the Dutchman Verstappen who achieved the fastest lap by stopping the clock at 1:31 .936. The constant in training were Leclerc, Sainz and Russell who again took second, third and fourth place, respectively.

In fifth place was the two-time world champion Fernando Alonso from Alpine. Checo Pérez finished seventh practice behind Valtteri Bottas. Mick Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Kevin Magnussen completed the first ten timers. In terms of equipment, the presence of the two Haas cars inside them is noteworthy.
