The former guerrilla and former vice-general of Nicaraguan Victor Hugo Tinoco, one of the 46 opponents of the regime of Daniel Ortega, who has been detained since last year, is in “serious health” and fears of his life, relatives and human rights groups warned on Tuesday.

Cristián Tinoco, the daughter of a prisoner, explained in a record published in the media that her father suffers from “aggravating factors” such as high blood pressure, heart rhythm disorders and low white blood cells.

My dad's defense system is abnormally low. I already had a bone marrow biopsy to confirm that it was cancer and could not find the cause of the decrease in white blood cells.”

Ortega's former arms comrade, 69-year-old Tinoco, recently sentenced him to 13 years in prison for undermining national integrity as part of several trials against opponents arrested last year, including seven presidential candidates.

The arrest occurred at the beginning of the November elections, and since 2007, Ortega, who came to power, was elected for a term for four consecutive years.

Ortega accuses him of plotting to overthrow him with the support of Washington; their regime prosecutes them in accordance with the law passed by the Government Congress in 2020, which punishes those who violate national integrity and promote acts that support sanctions and foreign interference.

Opposition parties and the international community believe that the arrest worked to ensure Ortega's continuity of power.

The European Union said: “In this trial, judges and prosecutors systematically violated due process (...) The presumption of innocence was violated in a public memo by the Prosecutor's Office, describing prisoners as “criminals” and “criminals.”

On February 12, another imprisoned opponent, former guerrilla fighter Hugo Torres (Hugo Torres), died in a hospital after spending eight months in prison. .

The Independent Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (Cenidh) demanded the freedom of Tinoco. “He is in serious health and “his life is in danger”.

After Torres died, the authorities sent about 7 opponents with health problems who were imprisoned.

Of the 46 opponents who have been detained so far, at least 37 have been sentenced to imprisonment between 8 and 13 years.

One of the last “guilty” discovered was Cristiana Chamorro, a favorite journalist to confront Ortega in last year's presidential election.

The beliefs of the daughter of former President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro (1990-1997) will be announced in the coming days.
