AP Source: Pfizer will request authorization of 4th dose of vaccine

WASHINGTON (AP) — Pharmaceutical producer Pfizer is going to request authorization in the United States this week for an additional booster of the COVID-19 vaccine for the elderly, according to a person familiar with the matter.

That would add one dose to the vaccine schedule, which currently consists of a primary series of two injections, followed months later by a booster, with the aim of providing maximum protection for the population over 65, who have been most affected by the pandemic.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention must approve the order. The person who spoke about the request for authorization by Pfizer did so on condition that anonymity was preserved.

“We continue to collect and evaluate all available data and are in an ongoing, open dialogue with regulators and health authorities to assist in the COVID-19 vaccine strategy as the virus evolves,” said Pfizer spokeswoman Jerica Pitts.

On Sunday on CBS's “Face the Nation” program, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said that “right now, as we have seen, a fourth reinforcement is needed. The protection you are receiving from the third party is good enough, in fact, very good against hospitalizations and deaths. It's not that good against infections, but it doesn't last long. But we are submitting that data to the FDA and then we will see what experts outside Pfizer say.”
