(ATR) The U.S. dominated on the third and final day of boxing quarterfinals at the Pan American Games in Lima.

A crowded house with plenty of energy at the Coliseo Miguel Grau Coliseum greeted the boxers for the 10 match session Monday evening.

Boxing has been on the Pan Am Games program since the first games in 1951. Women’s boxing was added in 2011.

In his first Pan Am competition, U.S. boxer Delante Johnson defeated Alexander Rangel of Colombia to advance to the finals in the men’s welterweight division.

Johnson says he hopes to qualify for Tokyo 2020.

In the women’s division, U.S. boxer Virginia Fuchsdefeated Valeria Cardenas of Costa Rica, advancing to the semi finals.

Fuchs tells Around the Rings her experience sparring with Cardenas at the Pan American Games qualifier helped her in the Monday bout.

This is the first Pan Am competition organized without AIBA oversight since the IOC suspended the governing federation in June.

Fuchs and Johnson say the problems for the federation have not affected their preparations.

In fact, Fuchs says, there seems to be a lot to like about how things are being done.

"I really like how it’s set up. It’s very professional. Like I was telling my coach, (I) went to see the doctor afterwards and I really like that, because that’s never happened. I think that’s really important for boxers."

Semi-finals are set for Tuesday. Competition concludes on Aug. 2.
