An announcement is expected from the USOC to seek the Games, given that the two cities under consideration, Chicago and Los Angeles, are ready to submit bid documents on Jan. 22.
Last year, in declaring its interest in possibly launching a 2016 Olympics, the USOC had said it planned to decide by the end of 2006 whether a U.S. bid was feasible.
While a couple of weeks past that deadline, the announcement coming Tuesday should answer that question.
If affirmative, Chicago and Los Angeles will submit their bid files to the USOC for review by a panel of technical experts. A small evaluation commission would be formed to visit the two cities and issue a report. That report would form the basis of a decision in April by the USOC Board of Directors on a 2016 nominee.
It is possible that the announcement by the USOC would reserve the right not to nominate either city, should the board believe that neither can win a 2016 race.
So far, Tokyo and Rio De Janeiro are the only two cities which have formally been approved as 2016 nominees by their national Olympic committees. Madrid is expected to enter the contest, possibly Rome, along with fringe candidacies from the Middle East and Central Asia.
While the U.S. hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics, the last Summer Olympics in the U.S. was in Atlanta in 1996, a span of 20 years between then and 2016.
The IOC deadline to submit nominations for the 2016 Games is September 15.
