Tokyo 2016 joins with prestigious national university to promote sport studies

The Tokyo 2016 Bid Committee and the NationalInstitute of Fitness and Sports in Kanoya (NIFS) announced aprogramme of collaboration to enhance Japan’s sports educationsystem and deliver the incredible legacy of a Tokyo Games. This willsee the Bid Committee work with the Institute – renowned fordeveloping top-class athletes and coaches – on initiatives for theongoing benefit of the Olympic Movement.

Theagreements key elements are in the areas of research and education.Formal studies on Olympic and Paralympic bidding processes will beconducted utilising the practical experience of Tokyo 2016 and theacademic strengths of NIFS. Students at the Institute will also haveopportunities to undertake internships with the Tokyo 2016 BidCommittee.

Foundedin Kanoya, Kagoshima Prefecture in 1981, the NIFS has producedchampions such as Ai Shibata, who took freestyle swimming gold atAthens 2004 and in the process became the first female Japaneseswimmer to do so. Shibata, who is also a Tokyo 2016 AthleteAmbassador, has since returned to the NIFS and is currently asecond-year student in its Graduate School of Physical Education.

Theagreement marks Tokyo’s third partnership with an academicinstitution, following collaborations with Senshu University andRyutsu Keizai University.
