The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was greatly saddened to learn of the death of Syed Wajid Ali, IOC member from 1959 to 1996 and IOC honorary member since 1996.
Syed Wajid Ali played a major role in promoting the values of sport for decades throughout his career as President of the Pakistan National Olympic Committee (NOC). Elected as an IOC member in 1959, Syed Wajid Ali was Vice-Chairman of the Coordination and Supervising Committee for IOC/NOC Relations (1968-1971) and a member of the Executive Board (1966-1970). Serving the Olympic Movement, he also held a number of other IOC posts, and was member of the following commissions: Coordination and Supervising for IOC/NOC Relations (1967-1968), Press and Public Relations (1968-1972), Information and Culture (1973-1974), Inquiry for Rhodesia (1973-1975), Cultural (1980-1981), and Finance (1983-1996).
Despite a demanding career as an industrialist, Syed Wajid Ali dedicated a lot of energy to expanding health services and sports facilities for the people of Pakistan. His activities in the health sector included being Vice-President of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society and Chairman of the Liaquat National Hospital in Karachi and of the Gulab Devi Chest Hospital in Lahore.
The IOC expresses its deepest sympathy to Syed Wajid Ali’s family.
