(ATR) The Commonwealth Games Federation tells Around the Rings it is ready to take the next step in determining which city will replace Durban, South Africa as hosts of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The CGF released a statement on April 28 confirming which countries had expressed interest to host the event by the deadline. The four countries of Australia, Canada, Malaysia and the United Kingdom now enter a streamlined bid race that the CGF hopes to conclude this autumn.
While the countries have been confirmed, there is no word yet on which cities from each country could host the event. Several cities in both the U.K. and Australia have publicly expressed their intent to bid for the event. The CGF confirms that the April 28 deadline provided was only for interested countries to submit their intent.
"The expressions of interest have been at the national level, and now the process begins of working with those territories on detailed assessments to identify potential cities," a CGF spokesperson tells ATR.
The CGF will send an expert review team to each of the countries in the coming months to determine potential host cities.
"This will include a rigorous on-the-ground feasibility assessment and dialogue regarding hosting capacity and capability, resourcing and legacy ambitions, before a recommendation is made to the CGF Executive Board for final review and decision," CGF chief executive David Grevemberg said in a statement.
"We are delighted with the level of initial interest expressed by nations across the Commonwealth and look forward to working with all parties as plans develop for a Games to be proud of in 2022," added Grevemberg.
