London 2012 Reveals Olympic Torch Relay Route

(ATR) One year from the arrival of the Olympic Flame in the U.K, London 2012 announces the first 74 locations for the torch relay route. Land's End in the county of Cornwall is the starting point of the 70-day tour.

LOCOG today revealed the dates and locations for the evening celebration events and island visits on the torch relay route.

Every nation and region of the U.K. is represented. The Olympic torch will travel 8,000 miles (12,800 km), including six island visits. LOCOG also confirmed that officials are exploring the feasibility of taking the Olympic Flame on a short visit to Dublin.

The detailed route, including additional stops on the Olympic Flame's journey around Britain, will be confirmed later this year.

LOCOG says that 95 percent of the population will be within a one-hour journey time of the torch relay. Thousands of people are expected to line the route to celebrate the Olympics.

"The Olympic Flame will shine a light right across every nation and region of the U.K. and showcase the very best of who we are and where we live," said London 2012 chairman Sebastian Coe.

"The first locations on the route confirmed today give a flavor of the reach the Olympic Torch Relay will have around the UK and how extensive the opportunity for starting to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic Games will be.’

The torch relay will start at Land’s End, Cornwall on the morning of 19 May 2012 after arriving from Athens, Greece. The Olympic Flame will tour English towns and cities as well, while stops in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are planned.

The torch will make six island visits, travelling to the Isle of Man, Guernsey, Jersey, Shetland, Orkney and the Isle of Lewis.

In addition to the first 74 locations, LOCOG said "many other cities, towns, villages and places of outstanding natural beauty, sports venues and community hubs" would be unveiled later this year.

The Olympic flame will travel for about 12 hours each day, concluding on 66 of the 70 days with an an evening celebration event allowing thousands of people to enjoy concerts and shows staged by LOCOG and the three presenting partners Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung.

The torch relay arrives in London on July 21, making six stops before travelling to the 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium for the lighting of the cauldron at the opening ceremony on July 27.

Olympics minister Hugh Robertson said: "The Olympic torch relay brings London 2012 to the doorsteps of the UK giving everybody the chance to celebrate the London Games.

"It’s a magnificent showcase for the country and a chance to mark the achievements of inspirational people in our communities."

LOCOG announced the following supporting partners of the torch relay: Worldwide Olympic Partner Visa, tier one partners BMW, BT and EDF Energy and tier three providers Aggreko and Holiday Inn.

LOCOG will announce details of the London 2012 Olympic Torchbearer nomination program later Wednesday.
