After its Olympic Village, Lausanne now unveilsits brand new ice rink and Olympic Pool as part ofits Youth Olympic Games venue plan

One month before the International Olympic Committee (IOC) makes its final decision, Lausanne 2020 enthusiastically welcomes the choice of the "H2O" project for the future Malley ice rink and pool. The project was selected by the expert panel after the launch of an international architectural competition. The new rink will host the ice-based events for the Youth Olympic Games, should Lausanne be elected hosts in Kuala Lumpur on 31 July.

On June 5, the iconic, ring shaped "Vortex" project was unveiled. Vortex is an all-encompassing student accommodation centre planned to serve as the Olympic Village if Lausanne receives honour of hosting the Games in January 2020. Today, organisers announced the results of an architectural competition for the second iconic building related to the Youth Olympic Games - the new Malley ice rink. Lausanne architecture firm "Pont 12" was announced the winner with their project called "H2O". In keeping with the standard set by "Vortex", the future Malley ice rink and Olympic swimming pool will remain in use well after the completion of the Youth Olympic Games.

This news once again demonstrates the commitment and enthusiasm of all parties to the Youth Olympic Games project: The Malley Ice Intercommunal Centre, the City of Lausanne and the 26 neighbouring municipalities have come together to bring a prestigious offering designed specifically for the needs of both elite sport and the general public. The delivery of the project is scheduled for the second half of 2019.

The proposed centre includes an ice-rink with a capacity of 10,000 spectators, which will be designed as a multifunctional hall, a practice rink for 300 spectators, an outdoor skating rink in winter, a 50 meter Olympic swimming pool, a diving pit, a multi-function pool with movable floor and a paddling pool. The centre will also house table tennis and fencing training centres. The Malley Ice Intercommunal Centre will be a temple of sport, entertainment and culture for Lausanne, its suburbs and the surrounding area. The region has been waiting for many years for such a facility and the Centre will serve as a catalyst for its development and that of West Lausanne.

The entire project is estimated to cost 208 million Swiss francs and will be financed for the most part by the Canton of Vaud, the City of Lausanne and the 26 municipalities of the region. Once the usual preliminary planning procedures have been completed, work on the new site will begin in spring 2017. The Youth Olympic Games are scheduled to take place between the 10th and 19th of January, 2020. Finally, the new Centre will also host the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships alongside Zürich in May 2020.
