(ATR) Leaders in Birmingham, Alabama are officially turning their full attention to preparations for the
2021 World Games.
"This in important day for us," Birmingham Mayor William Bell said during a presentation to the International
World Games Association on Tuesday.
"The citizens of Birmingham are excited about this opportunity to showcase ourselves to the rest of the as a great sports city."
Bell and IWGA president Jose Perurena signed the host agreement for the 2021 World Games during theannual general meeting of the IWGA.
The meet took place at the 2015 SportAccord Convention World Sport & Business Summit.
Thirty-seven member federations of the IWGA welcomed organizers for both the 2017 and 2021 World Games at the meeting in Sochi.
Bell made the first presentation at the meeting, which was followed by the official signing of the hosting agreement for the 2021 World Games.
"We will do our very best to make sure this is the best World Games you have in some time."
The event will mark the first time the World Games will be back on U.S. soil since the inaugural Games in 1981, which took place in Santa Clara, California.
"We are happy to celebrate our anniversary back in the USA," Perurena said during the signing.
"Birmingham offers a perfect setting for an event like the World Games."
Perurena said the IWGA was particularly impressed with the support from sponsors and private companies generated in Birmingham for the 2021 Games.
"The organizers in Birmingham do not depend on public money, and this might be a future philosophy for hosting events like ours."
The IWGA chief concluded by saying, "We have to deliver nothing less than outstanding World Games.
"We are convinced that Birmingham will exceed these expectations."
A spokesperson for Birmingham 2021 said the convention is an early opportunity to open communication with possible stakeholders. They do not have a booth, but plan to set up several meetings at the Sochi Expocentre.
The IWGA did not hold an election at this year's AGM, but the board did introduce a new general manager, Chantal Boehi.
Boehi takes over from Patsy Dew who was elected to the position in 2005.
