July 19, 2004 (ATR) ? The new Athens tram line begins operation this week. The 26km line was built during the past two years as part of government efforts to improve public transport prior to the Games.

The tram runs between Syntagma Square and the coastal suburbs of Glyfada and Faliron, site of about a dozen venues. To avoid congestion in the center of the city during the Olympics, the tram not go as far as Syntagma. Instead service will start and stop near a Metro station that will take travelers to Syntagma as well as other Olympic venues.

The tram will run 24 hours a day. An adult fare costs 60 cents.
