After a voting by an electoral college, the announcement of the Best Athletes of 2014 was made in the award presentation ceremony of the Brazil Olympic Award, organized by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (BOC) on the evening of Tuesday, the 16th, at the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro. The 'Athlete of the Fans' trophy, a new feature in the traditional gala event of the Brazilian sports, went to the gymnast Flávia Saraiva.
In addition to the Athletes of the Year and the Athlete of the Fans, the 2014 highlights in each of the 43 sports also received their trophies in the BOC festivity. The event also honored the medalists of the Olympic Youth Games Nanjing 2014, held in August.
For the Athlete of the Fans, BOC selected athletes or pairs that marked the Brazilian sports in 2014, for their performance, example of overcoming, unprecedented achievement or for their attitudes and behaviors. In this category, Flávia Saraiva was chosen by the public, who voted on the social media Facebook and Twitter.
The 16th edition of the Brazil Olympic Award also honored the marathon runner Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima with the Adhemar Ferreira da Silva Trophy for representing the ethical, sports and moral values that marked Adhemar's career. The best coaches of the year, Morten Soubak (handball) and Jesus Morlán (speed canoeing), and the Best Athletes of the Youth Olympic Games also received awards.
