Steve Riddick will be sentenced in October.(ATR) U.S. Olympian Steve Riddick faces the prospect of several years in jail after being found guilty in a scheme involving fraudulent bank checks.
A jury in Manhattan handed down the verdict Thursday against Riddick, a gold medalist in track from the 1976 Olympics and now a coach.
He and three other defendants were charged with conspiracy, bank fraud and money laundering in a federal trial that has been underway since April.
Riddick’s conviction follows a guilty plea entered earlier this year by Tim Montgomery on related charges. Montgomery was a gold medalist in Sydney and held the 100m world record until it was stripped over doping violations.
Both Montgomery and Riddick face sentencing later this year. Jail terms of four years or more are possible.
Riddick was a coach for Montgomery and sprinter Marion Jones. She lived with Montgomery for some time, with whom she has a son.
Records show that Jones was one of a number of people who received a check from one of the fraudulent accounts but were not charged.
Riddick had no comment as he left the courthouse in New York. His attorney says Riddick is returning to his home in Norfolk, Virginia where he will coach athletes from the U.S. and abroad this summer.
