The general coordinator of Social Communication of the Presidency of the Republic, Jesús Ramírez Cuevas, said that voting against the Electric Reform promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) will be considered “betrayal of the homeland”.

Through his official Twitter account, the official recalled that next Sunday, April 17, history calls for the defense, once again, of the national interest, which is why he told the legislators of the Chamber of Deputies that “the people expect their vote in favor” of the presidential initiative.

Along with the publication, the Social Communication Coordinator shared a letter published on September 27, 1960, from then-President Adolfo López Mateos, when he decreed the nationalization of the electricity industry that same year.

In the letter, the former president argues that he returns electricity to the people of Mexico, although he warns that they should not be trusted, since “in future years some bad Mexicans identified with the worst causes in the country will try by subtle means to return oil and our resources to foreign investors.”

“Not a step back, was the slogan of Don Lázaro Cardenas del Rio, when nationalizing our oil. Today it was fortunate for electric power. People of Mexico, I dispense them from all obedience to their future rulers who intend to surrender our energy resources to interests alien to the nation we make up,” the message reads.

Likewise, López Mateos said that the country requires several years of technological evolution and administrative efficiency to achieve energy independence. “It would be foolish to say that Mexico does not require technological training in electricity and oil matters,” he added.

The message ended by stating that the Constitution is very clear, since energy resources and oil fields “are in perpetuity the sole and exclusive property of the Mexican people (...) Industrializing the country does not imply a public auction of our natural resources, nor does it imply the indiscriminate handing over of heritage.”

And in recent days, Jesús Ramírez Cuevas has been very active on his social network, publishing messages of support for the Electric Reform that is expected to be voted on this Sunday in San Lazaro.

On April 15, the official warned the opposition benches in the lower house, made up of the National Action (PAN), Democratic Revolution (PRD), Institutional Revolutionary (PRI) and Citizen Movement (MC) parties that citizens will be watching the vote.

It should be noted that since last Thursday night, members of the National Labour Front, headed by Armando Monter, began arriving at the Chamber of Deputies to settle in a sit-in.
