Venezuela's opposition leader and two-time presidential candidate Henrique Capriles said Thursday that the opening of an office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Caribbean country confirms the high court's decision to bring justice to possible human rights violations.
“This new visit by Prosecutor Karim Khan, coupled with the establishment of an ICC office in our Venezuela, confirms the ICC's decision to seek the way to bring justice to the country's terrible violations of the human rights,” Capriles wrote on his Twitter account.
He added that “any measure that allows serious investigations into human rights violations”, in Venezuela, so that “victims have justice and that respect for the rights of all is guaranteed, is the desire of the majority of Venezuelans.”
On Thursday, ICC prosecutor Karim Khan announced in Caracas that the body he leads will open an office in Venezuela, following an agreement reached with dictator Nicolás Maduro, with whom he held several meetings this week, in which he traveled to the Caribbean country after being invited by the regime.

Khan, who arrived in Venezuela last Tuesday, where he held private meetings with Maduro and other dictatorship authorities, highlighted the importance of the cooperation that - he assured - is being provided by the Government in the framework of the investigation agreed last November, when the prosecutor also traveled to the Caribbean country.
For his part, Maduro assured that Venezuela is complying with the memorandum of understanding signed in November, which highlighted the principle of complementarity so that the research process is carried out with mutual and permanent collaboration.
Hours later, opposition leader Juan Guaido said that the opening of the office represents “a step forward” in “determining responsibility” for crimes against humanity.
“Crimes against humanity have been and continue to be committed in Venezuela. Prosecutor Karim Khan's announcement of opening an ICC office in our country is a step forward in determining accountability and ensuring justice, something that does not exist today for Venezuelans,” wrote the president in charge of Venezuela, recognized by more than 50 countries, on his Twitter account.
