Seismic activity picks up on the Spanish island La Palma with 2.9 earthquake

Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Spain), 24 Mar The National Geographic Institute of Spain (IGN) located this Thursday afternoon a 2.9 earthquake in the municipality of Villa de Mazo on the Canary Island of La Palma. This earthquake occurred at 19.21 hours at a depth of 28 kilometers. IGN sources consulted by Efe indicate that after the end of the volcanic eruption in Cumbre Vieja, more than three months ago, there were earthquakes of greater magnitude than 2.9, although they were in the first days after the volcano stopped roaring. IGN teams are “attentive” to this “spike” in seismic activity, as between ten and twelve were counted in a short period of time, some of them of very low magnitude that are not included in the automatic system. In any case, the sources consulted by Efe indicate that there were already similar seismic swarms during this post-eruptive process. “The normal thing is that there will be peaks in activity for some time,” they warn from the IGN.
