Los Angeles (USA), 15 Mar Canadian tennis player of Ecuadorian descent Leylah Fernández defeated American Shelby Rogers on Monday and will face the Spanish Paula Badosa, the reigning champion of the tournament held in the Californian desert, in the round of 16 of Indian Wells. Fernández, number 21 in the WTA ranking, beat Rogers tonight 6-1, 3-6 and 6-3 in one hour and 39 minutes. For his part, Badosa, who ranks seventh in the world standings, defeated his compatriot Sara Sorribes Tormo in the afternoon 7-6 (4) and 6-1 in two hours. The round of 16 match between Badosa and Fernández will be played on Tuesday at the Indian Wells central court and will not start before 18 local hours (24 GMT). Badosa and Fernández are the only two Hispanic representatives still in the women's draw of the California tournament.
