Brazil has qualified for the Olympics exactly two years before they begin in Paris 2024. On Tuesday at Alfonso López Stadium in Bucaramanga, Colombia, La Canarinha beat Paraguay 2-0 in the 2022 Copa América Femenina semifinal game to earn their place in not only the final of the tournament against Colombia, but also in the French capital for the Olympic Games in 2024.

Ary Borges put Brazil on the board early with a goal at the 16′ mark and Beatriz Zaneratto João added to the tally just 12 minutes later to extend the lead over Paraguay. The team was able to hold off The Seleçao for the remainder of the game to have a shot at defending their title in the finals on Saturday.

Brazil was able to possess the ball for almost 70% of the game and stayed calm despite a few dangerous attacks from Paraguay. The seven-time continental champions know how to handle the pressure in high stakes games and showed that on Tuesday.

Following the game, the former United States Women’s National coach and two-time gold medal winning coach, Pia Sundhage, spoke to media and shared how special it was to qualify for the Olympics. At Tokyo 2020, Brazil were eliminated in the quarter-finals by the eventual gold medal winner Canada.

Sundhage is no stranger to coaching in the big leagues. She led the USWNT to gold in Beijing 2008 and London 2012 and was also at the helm when they went to the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final where they lost to Japan. Following her stint with the U.S., she returned to her native Sweden for a four-year contract, but did not find as much success back home. In 2019, she moved onto Brazil and has been working toward the same level of success found with the USWNT.

Brazil has now qualified for both the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand as well as the Olympics, but they have one final goal for this summer which will be to hoist the trophy following their final with host nation Colombia on Saturday.
