(ATR) Turkey will not be bidding for the 2014 Winter Olympics, the president of the Turkish National Olympic Committee tells Around the Rings. Togay Bayatli says reports in other media about a Turkish winter bid are not correct.
"The only place that is working on the Winter Olympics is the ministry of tourism," says Bayatli. He's referring to comments from the tourism minister that he wants to see the Anatolia region bid for 2014. The remarks, first uttered a week ago, have been widely reported despite the absence of any serious work on a bid.
"They have nothing," says Bayatli about the infrastructure and venues existing in the northeastern corner of Turkey. He says only today did local officials call the office of the NOC in Istanbul to inquire about what needed to be done to bid for the Games.
With the IOC deadline to apply for the 2014 race now one week away, Bayatli says the Turkish NOC will not nominate an unprepared candidate. All applications for Olympic bids must be submitted by the NOC, not government agencies.
Bayatli says the quest for the Summer Olympics remains the focus of the Turkish NOC. He says plans for a 2016 bid will be announced "when the time comes."
