By the Book: 2016 Olympic Table Tennis Venues

(ATR) All four bid cities propose plans for temporary construction on existing venues for table tennis for the 2016 Olympics. In this installment of By the Book, Around the Rings presents a look at the venues planned by Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo for the sport of table tennis.

Chicago Chicago’s table tennis venue will be located less than 5 km from the Olympic Village. (Chicago2016.org)

• $3.5 million for temporary construction

• Currently used as a convention center

Madrid Madrid’s IFEMA Pavilion 7 is currently used as an event venue.(Madrid2016.es)

• IFEMA Pavilion 7

• 5,000 Capacity

• $4.8 million for temporary construction

• 6 km from Olympic Village

• 10 km from IOC Hotel

• Currently used as IFEMA event venue

Rio de Janeiro Riocentro-Pavilion 3 in Rio will have different capacities for center court and preliminaries. (Rio 2016)

• Riocentro – Pavilion 3

• 5,000 (Center Court) / 2,000 (Preliminaries) Capacity

• $6.5 million in temporary construction

• 2 km from Olympic Village

• 32 km from IOC Hotel

• Currently used as an exhibition center

Tokyo Tokyo’s table tennis venue will hold up to 8,000 spectators. (Tokyo2016.or.jp)

• Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium

• 8,000 Capacity

• $4 million for temporary construction

• Currently used as sports arena
