The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Marcelo Ebrard, lashed out the statements issued by former US President Donald Trump, after assuring that threatened the government of López Obrador with imposing very high tariffs to implement a military deployment on the northern border.
And it is that on April 23, the Republican claimed to have broken the current administration to preserve migration policy and the program “Stay in Mexico”. “I have never seen anyone bend like this,” were Trump's words to the submissive stance of the “top representative” with whom he held a meeting (the name of the official was not specified, but it could be understood that he is Marcelo Ebrard).
Faced with this, the Mexican foreign minister spoke on the matter and supported the federal president and the actions taken in foreign policy. “As for former President Trump's statements, I am aware of President López Obrador's patriotism at those critical moments,” Ebrard commented in a Twitter thread.
He noted that AMLO did not accept the “safe third country” agreement as a condition for the United States not to impose tariffs on Mexico, in addition to having achieved autonomy in the energy sector as stipulated in the Mexico-US-Canada Treaty (TMEC).
He also mentioned Mexico's intervention in the “rescue” of the former Bolivian president, Evo Morales, when he was exiled from his country. He added that, had it not been for President López Obrador, he could not have differed with regard to his relationship with Venezuela and other relevant foreign policy actions in defense of Latin America.
