One of the most terrible images of the weekend in motorsports featured the Spanish driver Marc Márquez, who suffered another fall this Saturday in the third free trial session of the Portuguese Grand Prix, in which the fastest was local driver Miguel Oliveira (KTM). Fortunately, beyond his cumbersome fall, Márquez was able to get off the track without major complications.
The Honda star rider hit his head hard after losing control of his bike on a track that was soaked by weather conditions. The route was drying up, but there was still a lot of water.
Although his fall set off alarms in Portimão, the 29-year-old Catalan competitor managed to recover quickly and did not seem to have been damaged. Marquez went to the ground at turn 8 when he was driving about 50 miles an hour. His motorcycle whipped him from behind and he flew out. His impact with his head on the ground opened the visor of his helmet.
This is not the first time that Marc Márquez has been in this type of situation this season. He has been the victim of numerous falls in recent months, even missing two Grand Prix this year because of his vision problems caused by the blows.
Even so, despite the adverse conditions and the weight of the record, Márquez achieved the fifth fastest time, just behind South African Brad Binder (KTM). After his incident, he only returned to the track to practice the time of the start.
In difficult asphalt conditions, although not as adverse as in Moto3, MotoGP riders immediately began to lower their records, with special mention for the local “idol” Miguel Oliveira (KTM RC 16), who took the lead by rolling in 1:50 .583, 83 milliseconds faster than yesterday's record the rider achieved yesterday by Repsol Honda, to “scratch” a little later a few thousandths more with a 1:50 .552.
QUALIFICATION AFTER THE THREE FREE SESSIONS OF THE PORTUGUESE GP:
1. Miguel Oliveira (POR/KTM): 1:50 .552
