The 29-year-old Swiss athlete Mujinja Kambundji gave the big surprise of the first day of the Indoor Athletics World Cup by winning the 60m, hours after Cuban Lazaro Martínez won the gold in the triple jump, this Friday in Belgrade.

Kambundji set a time of 6.96 seconds, the best world record of the year and the fourth in history (matched by Jamaican Merlene Ottey and Greece's Ekaterini Thanou), beating the Americans Mikiah Brisco (6.99) and Marybeth Sant-Price (7.04) in the final, silver and bronze respectively.

“I wasn't even sure I won. I saw that the camera was focused on me, so I told myself that maybe I had won (..) I knew that gold would be played below seven seconds, but I felt able to break my personal record,” Kambundji said.

The Swiss sprinter thus achieved her first world crown, having been 3rd in the World Cup in 2018 and bronze in 200 m at the Doha Open Air World Cup in 2019.

Thanks to a great start, Kambundji defeated the American pair, who had dominated the series and semifinals, and especially Poland's Ewa Swoboda, who arrived in Belgrade with the best record of the year (6.99), but failed at the start up, finishing at the foot of the podium (7.04).

In the morning, the Cuban Martínez won the first gold in the World Cup in Belgrade. The 24-year-old Guantanamero jumper thus achieved his first major international success, having been junior world champion in 2014 and 2016.

His victory in Belgrade-2022 was with a better distance of 17.64 meters, which is the highest achieved so far this season and his personal best.

He beat Olympic champion Pedro Pablo Pichardo, who was born in Cuba but competing for Portugal, on the podium of his test, who settled for silver after reaching 17.46 meters, while bronze went to American Donald Scott (17.21 meters).

Pichardo continues to see how gold resists him in World Cups, where he had already been silver in another indoor edition, when he represented Cuba at Sopot-2014. Also with the flag of the Caribbean country he was runner-up in the open air world in Moscow-2013 and Beijing-2015.

In the other men's final of the day, the Greek Miltiadis Tentoglou won gold in the long jump with 8.55m.

In the women's category, Ethiopian Lemlem Hailu won the 3,000-meter final, the Portuguese Auriol Dongmo in the weight throwing and the Belgian Noor Vidts asserted herself as the most complete athlete by winning the pentathlon.
