Lima, 17 Mar Supporters of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000) considered this Thursday that the decision taken by the Constitutional Court (TC) to approve a habeas corpus in favor of the former president that will allow him to be released from prison is “absolute justice”. “President Fujimori's freedom is one of absolute justice. For everything he did for Peru (a lot), but it is, above all, because, legally, it belongs to him. The Constitution is always respected, not only when it suits a group,” the secretary general of the Fuerza Popular party, Luis Galarreta, wrote on Twitter. The also member of the Andean Parliament assured that the family of the former president “awaits him”. The congressman of Fuerza Popular, founded by Keiko Fujimori -daughter of the former president-, Hernando Guerra García welcomed the TC's decision on the same social network and affirmed that, if the left were coherent, “it should respect the ruling”. “But, I think it's a lot to ask for one day,” he said. For his part, Fujimori's general practitioner, Alejandro Aguinaga, told the RPP radio station that this measure “does justice” and considered that it should not “bring a tail”. Finally, Fujimori's lawyer, Cesar Nakazaki, told reporters that the decision “is a great relief” for the former president because “it was totally unfair for him to die in prison.” “This is not an issue of impunity, it is not about avoiding punishment, what is about evaluating whether it is human for a man to die in prison,” he said. The Constitutional Council declared well the appeal brought by lawyer Gregorio Parco Alarcón against the Supreme Court decision, which in 2018 rescinded the pardon granted to Fujimori on December 24, 2017 by then-President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016-2018). With this decision, Fujimori, 83, will be able to leave Barbadillo prison, located in Lima's Ate district, where he was serving a 25-year prison sentence for crimes against humanity.
