Turner Field, a physical reminder of Atlanta's Olympic history, is in danger of demolition after the Atlanta Braves relocate in 2017, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.
If the stadium is destroyed, it will be the third structure built specifically for Olympic purposes to be destroyed, after London's White City Stadium (used in the 1908 Summer Games) and London’s Wembley Stadium (used in the 1948 Summer Games).
Centennial Olympic Stadium, as the structure was originally called, was built to house the 1996 Summer Olympic Games’ opening and closing ceremonies, as well as track and field events. After the Olympics’ conclusion, the stadium was refurbished with baseball in mind and renamed Turner Field. The Atlanta Braves took residence at Turner Field in 1997, but the news of their departure to suburbs north of the city means the structure, and a large piece of Atlanta's Olympic legacy, is endangered.
However, while local residents ponder the future of their local sports team, Ed Hula, editor of Around The Rings, points out the worldwide impact the demolition of Turner Field could have on sports.
"This episode could influence how a U.S. city positions itself and any stadium it might build for a 2024 Olympic bid. Some IOC members might ask, "Are you going to tear this one down too?"
