TOKYO, November 29, 2007 – "Tokyo 2016" now lights up two Tokyo’s landmarks, the Tokyo Tower and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, providing a decorative and colourful night view of Tokyo to enthusiastically announce its application to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016.
Tokyo Tower, a beloved landmark of the Japanese capital, currently displays proudly “TOKYO” and “2016” in Olympic colors on each of its faces. Originally constructed in 1958 for transmitting broadcast waves, the 333-meter high tower stands in the heart of the city as the symbol of Tokyo. Visited daily by travelers, the observatory within Tokyo Tower provides visitors with a 360-degree view of both Tokyo and the Kanto region, and even at times, Mount Fuji. As the tallest man-made structure in Japan, the tower occasionally delights the people of Tokyo with splendid “light-ups” in a variety of colors, and this “Tokyo 2016” version of the tower will run until the end of November.
Another landmark and well-visited tourist spot in Tokyo, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings are also currently colored in Olympic colors in an effort to spur more momentum for the bidding activities nationwide. The building, which stands at an impressive 243 meters tall, started functioning as the Tokyo Metropolitan Government office in 1991 and the Tokyo 2016 Olympic Games Bid Committee also maintains its offices here. This unique edifice was designed by Kenzo Tange, an internationally-renowned architect with masterpieces such
as the Grand Ecran (Place d' Italie) in Paris, the Hiroshima Peace Site including the museum and Memorial Park, the Royal State Palace in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), and more. He first became famous with his design of the National Gymnasiums for the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, where he received the Diploma of Merit from the International Olympic Committee in 1965.
