Seoul, 25 Mar North Korean media confirmed Friday that the regime launched its new Hwasong-17 intercontinental missile (ICBM) the day before and that the shell reached flight levels previously not achieved by its army. The missile, “launched from Pyongyang International Airport, rose to a maximum altitude of 6,248.5 kilometers, flew 1,090 kilometers for 4,052 seconds and landed precisely at the planned location, in the high seas waters of the East Sea of Korea (the name given to the Sea of Japan in both Koreas),” KCNA reported. The trial, which was attended by leader Kim Jong-un, according to KCNA, was the first of an ICBM since 2017 and contributes to increased tension in the region as it meant for North Korea to break the moratorium that it self-imposed in 2018 to try to achieve a climate of diplomatic understanding with the US. The text of the North Korean state news agency states that “the test launch of the intercontinental ballistic missile was carried out through the procedure of launching at an open angle taking into account the safety of neighboring countries”. Hwasong-17, which was launched at an angle close to 90 degrees to draw a very pronounced parable, landed in Japanese waters just 150 kilometers west of the island of Hokkaido, making it the closest North Korean projectile to fall from Japan's shores. Tokyo yesterday denounced the launch and Pyongyang's failure to notify the maritime and air traffic authorities in advance. KCNA points out that the development of the new missile has been carried out “in a short period of time” and that Thursday's test “clearly demonstrated that the essential elements of the weapons system accurately met the design requirements.” The text adds that “operational reliability” in a theater of war is “guaranteed in a scientific and practical way” through this test. The North Korean regime drew up at the 2021 single party congress a five-year plan for arms modernization that is behind its current range of weapons tests (12 since the beginning of the year, a record number). In turn, since the failure of the negotiations with the US in 2019, it has rejected US invitations to dialogue at a time when the country is still completely closed by the pandemic and without vaccines, which makes holding high-level diplomatic meetings unfeasible.
