CIUDAD VICTORIA, Mexico (AP) — Mexican authorities reported Monday the capture of the leader of the Northeast Cartel, a Los Zetas split, in the fief of this criminal organization in the border town of Nuevo Laredo, which led to a series of clashes that led to the temporary closure of the crossings to Texas.

The detainee is Juan Gerardo Treviño, alias “El Huevo”, although the government statement only identifies him as Juan Gerardo “N” and by his nickname, for legal reasons.

Treviño also led the group of hit men called “Troops of Hell”, heirs to the violent procedures of Los Zetas and the authorities accuse him of generating violence in five states of the country and in the region of the small border of Tamaulipas, the one with the largest illegal crossing of migrants into the United States.

The arrest took place on Sunday and, according to the government, is a “blunt blow” to the Northeast Cartel.

Insecurity and shootings caused temporary closures on two of the bridges connecting Nuevo Laredo to Texas, the most important commercial crossing between Mexico and the United States. The US Border Patrol indicated that traffic was restored on Monday morning at 7 a.m.

The arrest took place when the criminal group attacked military personnel who were doing reconnaissance work in the city. The rest of the criminals fled.

The detainee had two weapons for the exclusive use of the army and had three arrest warrants, one for extradition for conspiracy for drug trafficking and money laundering; another from the state of Tamaulipas for extortion and criminal association and the third from the border state of Coahuila for intentional homicide and terrorism.

Military personnel with the air force will arrive in Nuevo Laredo on Monday to strengthen security, the official statement added.
