Olympic Day Around the World

(ATR) A look at how countries around the world are celebrating Olympic Day worldwide.

(ATR) Olympic Day is held annually on June 23 to commemorate the birth of the Olympic Games in 1894 with millions of people celebrating in 160 countries.

The mission of Olympic Day is to promote the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect, as well as the three pillars of Olympic Day: move, learn and discover.

Australia

Leading up to Olympic Day, Olympians are inspiring communities across the country from visiting schools, hospitals, and a special run--- The Deadly Fun Run at Uluru with the Indigenous Marathon Project.

"Olympic day is a great time to reflect – it signifies great achievement across the board from so many different people and it’s an honour to be a part of. It’s very humbling to part of this Olympic family, I still pinch myself," said bobsledder Lachlan Reidy.

Bangladesh

The Bangladesh Olympic Association will host an Olympic Day run concurrently at all district and divisional headquarters.

Ghana

Toyota Ghana Limited will sponsor the Olympic Day Run working closely with both the International Olympic Committee and the Ghana Olympic Committee.

The event will be held at the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua on Saturday, June 22.

To mark the day’s activities, there will be a symbolic tree planting. This year's Olympic Day celebration will be unique due to the fact Koforidua will host the event for the first time in three decades.

India

In Kozhikode, Olympic Day will be observed with a variety of programs.

1,500 athletes will participate in the run along with Mayor Thottahil Raveendran flagging off the run. Olympic Day will conclude at the Sports Council office.

Malta

The Maltese Olympic Committee will host a number of events collaborating with various federations to honor Olympic Day. Some events include but are not limited to Beach Games in Birżebbuġia, and Softball at Marsa Sports Club.

Pakistan

Murree will host an Olympic Day Archery Championship July 2-3 at the Bhurban Stadium.

Switzerland

More than 30 athletes from both winter and summer sports will gather at the Olympic capital to take part in the Olympic capital run on June 22.

The visiting Olympians, along the IOC Members, have won a total of 125+ Olympic medals; This is a symbolic number as the IOC celebrates its 125th anniversary on Sunday.

Olympic legends such as 13-time Olympic Medalist Ole Einar Bjoerndalen (Norway), and Olympic champions Tina Maze (Slovenia), Santiago Lange (Argentina), Osea Kolinsau (Fiji) and Yuna Kim (Republic of Korea).

Thailand

Thailand held an Olympic Day Run at the Supachalasai National Stadium in which over 10,000 attended. Khemmatat Janprapa and Kalaya Suddai were the top winners in the men’s and women’s 10km.

United States

The United States Olympic Committee is hosting more than 500 events in honor of Olympic Day. The events are scheduled in close to 300 communities nationwide. More than 200,000 people engaged in celebration of the Olympic and Paralympic movements.

Twelve Major League Baseball teams will participate by honoring U.S. Olympians and Paralympians with an array of ceremonies on the field.

Participating clubs include the Boston Red Sox, Colorado Rockies, Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers and Washington Nationals.
