The XXI ANOC General Assembly came to a close today in Doha, with the world’s 205 NOCs approving a number of resolutions which reiterated ANOC’s commitment to working in cooperation with the IOC and the entire Olympic Family to build towards a brighter future for the Olympic Movement.
The two-day General Assembly brought together the world’s NOCs as well as International Federations, Organising Committees and 2024 Candidate Cities as they discussed the most pressing issues currently facing NOCs and the Movement. The General Assembly applauded Rio 2016 for the way it showcased sport’s power to unite the world; however, agreed that while the Olympic Movement could look ahead with much confidence, reforms needed to be made.
ANOC expressed its support for the IOC decision to allow clean Russian athletes to compete at Rio 2016 and reaffirmed that the protection of clean athletes remains a top priority. ANOC agreed WADA’s organisation needed to be reformed.
ANOC reiterated its support for the principle of autonomy of sports organisations and condemned all kinds of interference in the governance of sports organisations. The General Assembly was disappointed to learn of the situation of the Olympic Movement in Kuwait and supported the IOC’s position on the matter.
ANOC President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah said:
"The Rio 2016 Olympic Games demonstrated the power of sport and the Olympic Movement. Half of the world watched the Games and witnessed the numerous examples of solidarity and unity demonstrated by the world’s 205 NOCs. But while Rio was a great success, we recognise that there are many areas of our Movement that need reform. We have seen here at our General Assembly that the NOC family is committed to working in cooperation with the IOC to bring about real reform and ensure clean athletes are protected.
"Through our ANOC Commissions and Working Groups we will continue to undergo our own internal process of reform so that we can support our NOCs and contribute to the sustainability and long-term health of the Olympic Movement."
The ANOC General Assembly heard progress reports from the chairs of the nine ANOC Commissions and Working Groups which are responsible for leading ANOC forward in its process of reform. The General Assembly was encouraged to hear of the excellent initiatives of each of the groups. The ANOC Legal Commission presented the ANOC Compliance Policy and ANOC Code of Ethics which was unanimously approved and underlines ANOC’s commitment to good governance and reform. The ANOC Athletes’ Commission emphasised the importance of education, its support of athletes and creating a better environment for them to perform. The ANOC Athletes’ Commission also outlined plans to hold Continental forums every two years to educate athletes and enhance support for them. The ANOC International Relations Commission emphasised its commitment to strengthen independence of all NOCs based on recommendations from the IOC and UN as ANOC continues to improve support to NOCs.
During the General Assembly it was also announced that Prague would host the ANOC General Assembly next year.
