(Bloomberg) -- Las temperaturas récord que afectaron el noroeste del Pacífico en junio enviaron a 3,500 personas a las salas de emergencia de los hospitales por enfermedades relacionadas con el calor, informaron los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC, por sus siglas en inglés).
El número de visitas a la sala de emergencias en mayo y junio se elevó en Oregon, Washington, Idaho y Alaska. La mayoría tuvo lugar durante la última semana de junio, cuando Portland alcanzó los 46,7 grados Celsius.
En junio, las visitas de emergencia diarias promedio relacionadas con el calor fueron siete veces más altas en la región que en 2019. Los investigadores no usaron 2020 como referencia para la comparación porque el covid-19 distorsionó los patrones típicos de las visitas al hospital.
El informe destaca uno de los riesgos para la salud del cambio climático. En el noroeste de EE.UU, “Se prevé que en los próximos años, el aumento de las temperaturas cause efectos adversos significativos para la salud”, escribió la agencia.
EE.UU. registra alrededor de 700 muertes relacionadas con el calor en un año promedio, dijeron los CDC.
