(ATR) The United States earned 14 medals on Tuesday, increasing their lead in the medal count to 23 over second place Canada at the Pan Am Games in Toronto.
The U.S. now has 183 total medals with 69 golds while Canada trails with 160 and 59 golds. Brazil is in a commanding lead for third with 110 medals and 32 golds.
Canada had a strong showing in the first day of track and field events on Tuesday winning four gold medals. The track events continue Wednesday morning with women competing for gold in the high jump to start the day.
Athletes in seven other track events will also compete for gold, most notably the men and women’s 100 meter finals at the end of the day.
The rest of the action on Wednesday includes athletes beginning competition in doubles bowling and road cycling. The first day of road cycling features athletes competing for gold in the individual time trial event.
Individuals in men and women’s table tennis will begin their tournament today as the team events concluded Tuesday evening. The U.S. took home gold for the women and Brazil won gold on the men’s side.
The first medals will also be given out Wednesday in the waterski and wakeboard competition for the men and women’s overall events as well as men’s wakeboard.
Wednesday will be the final day of competition for athletes in taekwondo as athletes compete for medals in the heavyweight division on both sides.
